"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood."

About Me

I have been a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for over 20 years in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties. Earning my MS degree in 1989 in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling, I was trained in Family Systems Therapy. This therapy style recognizes that the family functions as a system, the problem is never one person's fault, is has formed based on how the entire family interacts. This leaves me with a completely non-blaming and non-judgemental stance when clients come in with a problem. Together we can eliminate what has not worked in the past, and create a system that works.

Working individually with people I strive to provide a safe and supportive place where people can feel comfortable bringing in whatever issues that are troubling them. It is not my place to judge what is presented to me, only to help clients achieve the changes that they want to see in their lives. I often use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy tools, teaching clients how to control their thoughts and reactions to situations in order to change their behaviors. This is helpful with problems such as anxiety, OCD, and depression.

I have worked in a variety of settings, with a large variety of clients and issues. For many years, I worked in agency settings, with families that are going through the courts and learning better ways to deal with their children to be able to better provide a safe and supportive home. Over my 20 years, I have worked with children with behavioral problems, learning differences, ADHD, OCD, spectrum disordres and foster placement or adoption issues. I enjoy working both with these kids, helping them learn better coping skills as well as with their parents, helping them learn parenting styles unique to that child.

My specialized training and experience includes; play therapy with young and older children, anxiety and depression in children and adults, CBT, Post-partum mood disorder, GLBT issues, including supporting clients through transitioning, step-families and alternative family styles.

Not only am I willing to work with teenagers, I can easily say that I enjoy them, and helping them make choices into adulthood.
